Volunteer
Ministry
Making an impact
Meeting
the diverse needs of the people we serve requires the coordinated
efforts of many staff and volunteers. The 60 full-time staff of
The City Mission couldn't begin to address these needs without
the dedicated efforts of hundreds of faithful volunteers. The
City Mission has always worked on a very conservative financial
basis with 80 cents of every dollar going directly to program
expenses. We can only do this because many give sacrificially
of their time and use their gifts to invest in the lives of others.
Those interested in volunteer service at the Mission should plan
to attend one of our monthly "Prospective Volunteer Introductions."
There are over 100 different positions available to individual
volunteers and to church and community groups.
The
purpose of the Volunteer Ministry Department
is
to serve the ministries of The City Mission and to empower them
through high impact volunteers. Our goal is to implement a biblical
model of Christian service. In Exodus 18 Moses' father-in-law
Jethro identified a weakness in Moses' successful ministry and
told him, "What you are doing is not good," either for him or
the people he was ministering to. He went on to submit a plan
of volunteer service that trained others to work with him in significant
ministry positions. This same principle is commanded in the New
Testament. Paul, in 2 Timothy 2:2, directs us to, "...entrust
to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others."
We
recognize the importance of recruiting and training partners in
ministry who will join us in impacting children, teens, men, and
women living in urban neighborhoods by teaching personal faith
in Christ and compassionately ministering to their needs.
Volunteer
ministry at The City Mission covers a broad spectrum of activities
divided into Community Involvement, Local Church, and Volunteer
Staff opportunities. The differences lie in the amount of screening
and commitment for each position.
-
Community
Involvement ministry
requires minimal screening and commitment
-
Local
Church ministry
requires moderate screening and commitment
-
Volunteer
Staff ministry
requires significant screening and commitment
When
a person is motivated, whether by indebtedness to Christ or special
burden for the city, to explore volunteer ministry with The City
Mission, he or she is invited to attend one of our Prospective
Volunteer Introductions.
At
this meeting people will be introduced to the strategies and approaches
that are being successfully applied to the problems of poverty,
homelessness, addictions, and crime in the lives of the people
impacted by our ministries, and presented with opportunities for
both groups and individuals to participate and the steps to take
to pursue involvement.
After
placement, volunteers communicate with, are led by, and, if necessary,
receive training from ministry staff. Volunteers also receive
periodic correspondence from the Volunteer Ministry Department
to keep the abreast of opportunities and needs.
