Clifford's journey through the Pathways Youth Program began at the age of seven, with his mother flagging down a City Mission bus and asking the driver about enrollment. Clifford said that at first, he just came to the Pathways Center to hear the stories and get together with friends. By the time he was nine, he accepted Christ into his life while at the Pathways summer camp at Grand Valley Christian Center, a camp operated by The City Mission. Being in the peaceful surroundings of camp and away from the cares of the city had a profound affect on Clifford, especially after having lost a close friend to a gang-related accident.
Like signposts along life's way, Clifford credits City Mission staff Craig Vincent and Andre Freeman with providing the direction and support he needed. "Pathways secured me morally and religiously," Clifford said. "I don't know where I would be without Pathways."
Pathways Youth Center is just that….a place where youth are shown the path of a Christ-centered life. For Pathways alumni, Clifford Powell, that path has led him to Baldwin Wallace College, where he is a pre-med student, thanks to student grants and a partial scholarship from the City Mission.

Pathways Youth Ministry
An ounce of prevention

Pathways Youth Ministry is our preventive focus, that encourages children and youth to avoid the many wrong paths that can damage or destroy their lives and instead lead Christ-centered lives so that they can enter adulthood ready to contribute to society. Creative evangelism, relevant Bible instruction, adult and youth mentoring, music, drama, leadership training, and fun, wholesome recreational activities together help youth successfully live out Biblical principles and reach their God-given potential. Last year we added a new after-school computer learning center where committed volunteer tutors help children succeed and excel in school. Our goal is to see increasing numbers of our youth take advantage of the Mission's college scholarship program.

Pathways Clubs
Inspiring youth to learn and live out Biblical principles, using classroom instruction, mentoring, drama, music and other activities.

Academic Tutoring
Helping to assure success in school and later in life, by tutoring and mentoring students who are preparing for the 4th and 9th grade proficiency tests.

Church Basketball League
Partnering with neighborhood churches to encourage youth to "play drug free" and live Christ-centered lives. Weekly competitive basketball is preceded by "huddle meetings" which incorporate Bible discussions and activities on issues most relevant to youth.

Performing Arts
Providing youth with creative outlets for expressing Biblical messages, through the use of drama, music and dance.

Day and Overnight Camping
Providing free, week-long camp experiences to youth who faithfully participate in the Bible Clubs throughout the school year. Providing Day Camp to younger neighborhood children who have not yet been to the Pathways Program.

Leadership Training

Providing adult mentoring and service opportunities to youth who show leadership potential. Encouraging youth to be service-oriented through participation in mission trips.
